The four of us enjoy a week of basking in the lap of luxury, all the sweeter for having 6 days of travel dirt and crummy hotels behind us.....

Finally, Monday 3/24 at 4PM, we arrive in Cabo San Lucas and make our way to the Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Resort, where we have our timeshare. We are really looking forward to a hot shower and a dip in the pool, and sleeping in a luxurious bed for a change! The Honda is filthy, and Bill wants to wash it, but the resort has no wash facilities for cars and Nancy says why bother, it'll just get filthy again on the way home......so we leave it dirty.

Narrow roads and primitive conditions don't scare away the intrepid RV enthusiast! We passed several caravans of RVs, some of them big boys, with tow cars, working their way along highway 1. I'm hoping I can do a Mexico RV trip in the not too distant future, maybe to Copper Canyon. We'll see. My co-pilot is somewhat less enthusiastic.....

Monday, March 24, and we're six days into our drive down the peninsula. It's 1050 miles from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas, but we've been taking it easy. This is no highway for being in a hurry. The curves are treacherous, the shoulders are pretty much non-existent, and the blacktop is maybe 10 feet wide at the most, some places less. We counted about 10 dead cattle (hit by cars or trucks) along the roadside, here's one that was fresh enough that the vultures were having a feast.

Sunday evening found us in La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur. It's a good-sized city, at least for Baja, and is supposedly the "new Cabo" with lots of building going on along the bay north of the city. We stopped at one of the beaches along the north shore, and collected shells.

Saturday night we looked for a hotel in Loreto. Unfortunately, so did about a zillion other people! We ended up in a real dive, right across the street from a noisy gas station. Anne took one look at the room and the bed, and said she was sleeping in the car! Keith finally convinced her otherwise, but it was the low point of the accomodations. What with the Easter weekend, spring break mania from California, and the very limited number of available rooms, it was lucky we found anything. Bill had attempted to make a reservation on line, but most of these hotels don't have any website or even an email address, so it ain't easy. Nancy said Bill was fired as a travel agent. Bill said that it was going to make our time-share in Cabo look even better, so deal with it! On the road, we met two motorcyclists who were riding around Baja for a month. Their wives wisely had decided to fly down and meet them at the end of the trip.....

Saturday, March 22, we said goodbye to Guerro Negro, and headed south and east across the peninsula to Loreto. On the way, we drove through some beautiful cactus forests, and saw some strange and wonderful varieties that exist only a few places in the world. Anne and Nancy had us stop to take pix of the many shapes and blossoms, as the winter rains had many of the cacti in bloom. Here are a few examples of the many pictures we took!
